Speaking recently at Sustainabilitylive!, Vanessa Harvard-Williams, global head of environment with legal firm Linklaters, discussed the 2020 and 2050 targets of reducing carbon emissions by (eventually) 80% and stated that she wants to see governments cascade their commitments down as hard regulations in order to help business.

The news this week has been full of SustainabilityLive!, or at least the green press has and the mainstream will follow once the MP expenses scandal no longer sells copy. Some good came out of it but, regrettably, a lot of outdated and misinformed truisms were paraded for the sake of making a splash.

An article in The Economist last week (“A stress test for good intentions”) provides a ray of hope that big business is finally ‘getting it’; CSR initiatives are worthy of consideration on cost grounds… and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Alistair Darling delivered an historic 2009 budget that leaves the high-bracket earners spitting blood, the country severely weighed down with the highest planned borrowing and debt since Bank of England records began and environmental issues clearly identified in this government’s list of priorities (low). In 2008 many green mutual funds and individual stocks lost up to 80% of their value but it seems that investors can now expect their portfolios to rise higher than the overall market as it recovers.

With everything that has been going on recently, such as Earth Day and the G20 summit et al, it seems appropriate to raise the question as to whether a company that is trying to survive and thrive in the current economic climate, as well as building or cementing a business strategy that encompasses sustainability and incorporates corporate social responsibility into its practices and interactions with internal and external customers, should not be considering a move away from not only Microsoft operating systems but also its business software.
