Whilst the energy poverty debate remains just that - a debate - and a firm commitment to carbon emission reduction is becoming more diluted with every pre-Copenhagen meeting and conference that takes place in the run up to next month, we continue to be fed the placebo that is carbon capture and storage (CCS).

A report, compiled and published by The Green Fiscal Commission, (read it here), proposes a radical rethink of our taxation system that has the potential to not only assist the UK in reaching its 2020 carbon reduction targets but also create a taxation model more relevant to the 21st century.

It’s been an interesting week as far as testing the teeth of the Companies Act 2006, who’s pulling the strings of both Gordon Brown and the judiciary in this country and if the government’s rhetoric around CSR, carbon reduction and climate change is anything more than just that – rhetoric.

Earlier this month, the government published new advice on how businesses should measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions; there is a guide for large businesses, especially appropriate with the latest ‘clarification’ of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRCEES), and one for small businesses who will not (for the time being, at least) fall under the scheme but who may want guidance on how to effectively measure their emissions.

EcoSecurities, ClimateBiz and Baker & McKenzie LLP have recently published the findings of their recent ‘Carbon Management and Offsetting Trends’ survey results 2009 and are ‘whooping up’ the fact that a surprising number of companies have reported that they have in place, or are planning, a carbon management strategy - despite the economic downturn.

A recent article caught my eye which highlights just how badly the business community (in this case in the USA) wants to deny reality in a last ditch effort to obviate the need to be come responsible in its actions and become more focused on the energy issue.
