Tax carbon - not labour?

A report, compiled and published by The Green Fiscal Commission, (read it here), proposes a radical rethink of our taxation system that has the potential to not only assist the UK in reaching its 2020 carbon reduction targets but also create a taxation model more relevant to the 21st century.

Carbon neutral – a definition?

Earlier this month, the government published new advice on how businesses should measure and report their greenhouse gas emissions; there is a guide for large businesses, especially appropriate with the latest ‘clarification’ of the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRCEES), and one for small businesses who will not (for the time being, at least) fall under the scheme but who may want guidance on how to effectively measure their emissions.

Let’s not applaud too soon!

EcoSecurities, ClimateBiz and Baker & McKenzie LLP have recently published the findings of their recent ‘Carbon Management and Offsetting Trends’ survey results 2009 and are ‘whooping up’ the fact that a surprising number of companies have reported that they have in place, or are planning, a carbon management strategy -  despite the economic downturn.

Carbon reductions in New York

Last week New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, launched the “One Year, One Thousand Supers” programme, intended to provide up to 40 hours training to 1,000 building superintendents as part of a campaign to reduce the carbon footprint for the city.
